The Different Types of Chipped Tooth Repair Options

Discover the different types of chipped tooth repair options available, from bonding to veneers to crowns, and find out which one is right for you.

Chipping a tooth can be a scary experience, especially if you are not sure the best course of action to repair the chipped tooth. At Healthy Smiles in Staten Island we have several options available to our patients dependent on the individual case. We will help to decide which treatment is the right one for you.

Bonding

Dental bonding is a quick and non-invasive chipped tooth repair option available to patients, that involves applying a tooth coloured composite resin to the affected tooth. This type of resin is then shaped and moulded to match the shape and also color of your natural tooth. This type of option is great for any small to medium sized chips and can often be completed in just one visit to our dental practice in Staten Island.

Veneers

Porcelain veneers are another option available to patients looking to have a chipped tooth repaired. Veneers are a think, custom made shell that are bonded to the front of your to teeth to help improve the appearance of your teeth. Veneers also can be used to help repair much larger chips or even to cover other cosmetic issues such as discolouration. This type of option is far more invasive when compared to bonding,  as a small amount of enamel needs to be removed from your natural tooth before the veneer can be applied. Also veneers are more durable and lasts longer than bonding.

Crowns

Dental crowns are also a more invasive chipped tooth repair option available to patients. This type of option involves capping the damaged tooth with a custom made porcelain or a ceramic crown. Crowns are typically used with patients who have a severe chip or fracture as they provide greater protection and support for the damaged tooth. However with this type of treatment crowns also require more preparation work and take longer to complete when compared to treatments such as bonding or veneers.

Dental Implants

If a chipped tooth is beyond repair, we would recommend a dental implant. This involves surgically placing a metal post into the jawbone, which serves as a replacement tooth for a prosthetic tooth. A dental implant can be used to replace one or several missing teeth and provide a patient a permanent, natural looking solution to chipped or missing teeth.

Conclusion

When trying to decide which treatment is right for you, its important to consider several factors including how severe the chip is, location of the tooth and your overall oral health. At Healthy Smiles we can help you make an informed decision by accessing what work needs to be carried out first and then finally recommending the best course of action and what you feel most comfortable with.
